Make sure you get the most out of CCTV

Tuesday, December 18, 2012

It seems like every day we wake up and turn the TV on, we are confronted with the news of another break in or another armed robbery. Crime statistics are reaching record highs, and criminals are becoming more brazen in their pursuit of some quick cash. A recent case saw the same 7/11 store robbed twice in one night. Robberies affect everyone, from the traumatised person behind the counter having a weapon shoved in their face, to shop owners and customers. While hiring security is the best option, we understand that this isn’t always feasible. Without security in place to deter would be criminals shop owners are left with few options. Electronic security in the form of closed circuit television (CCTV) is a terrific tool that is simply not being utilised effectively by business owners.

CCTV should be seen as more than a monitoring system to be looked at after a crime occurs. If used correctly CCTV makes for a powerful deterrent. So how do you get the most out of CCTV? The first answer to this question lies in quantity and angle. After recent incidents in the Robina shopping centre, management staff installed over 500 new cameras in order to capture more angles. A common mistake made by businesses is to utilise only one camera. Using one camera is often unreliable and it’s impossible to cover more obtuse angles. When installing multiple cameras make sure to cover entries, exits, and car parks and most importantly the shop front.

It is essential that CCTV is installed by trained professionals and that a good quality system is utilised. It is all too common to see robbery footage on the news captured by CCTV that is grainy and washed out. Often the footage is so poor, that criminals not wearing any facial covering are still almost impossible to identify. A good quality system will ensure that images are captured in crisp, high definition and subjects on camera are easy to identify. Camera quality and placement are essential, it is recommended that camera resolution be at least 320 television lines, that’s around half the resolution of you home television set.

There are huge ranges of variables that dictate the quality of the footage you will receive. By utilising a professional installation service, you are ensuring that all bases will be covered. Factors such as lighting and exposure all come into play, and filters may need to be added to stop screen flair. From a recording perspective most current systems still use the VHS method, while most new systems come with digital networks. While the VHS method is outdated it is still used and it’s important to make sure that tapes you are using are not damaged. If using a digital system, it’s a good option to have a hard drive that chunks of footage can be loaded onto and periodically replaced. When using digital ensure that files aren’t compressed as this reduces quality and that the footage is readily compatible on any media player, so as to be easy for police to review in the instance of a crime.

If a robbery is committed and you have followed these steps, then the police will have a head start on the crooks. When criminals case a property for potential robbery they will take camera placement into account. Well-placed cameras are perfect for deterring crime, while good quality footage ensures justice and recompense if a crime should occur. Examine your CCTV setup today and contact Pro-Tex Security if you’re interested in an assessment or an upgrade.
